PiperMethod™ Arms
or, add pizzaz and style to your own combos

Piper Reid Hunt, Ph.D. © 2007

Varying posture and arm positions can totally alter the look of a step. You can dance to an entire song with only 3 steps if you use different arms each time you repeat a step. When performing in clubs and at parties I prefer not to use choreography, but I do have favorite combos - series of steps that work well for me in sequence, with arm movements that flow from one step to the next. If you don't know the size, shape, or slipperiness of your stage ahead of time, it is better not to try to stick to a choreography, anyway. Combos are flexible and can be altered on the spot, according to the situation.

To develop your own combos, try three different arm poses or moves for each of your three favorite steps. Then see which ones flow the most gracefully from step to step – smooth transitions are important! Finally, vary the focus of your gaze. Traveling steps with open arms are perfect for smiling at the audience. If you want to draw the audience's attention to your hip, look at it and they will too. For slow sinuous moves, an introspective gaze that is angled slightly downwards, or looking up into the distance can add mystery and drama to the step. Developing your own combos will make your freestyle performances look polished, and if you were trying to do a choreography, they give you something to fall back on if your mind goes blank!

While the arm positions depicted here belong to the art of Oriental Dance, the ideas, concepts, words, and images on this page are my copyrighted original work. If you would like to use the images or text, all you have to do is ask. The Daughters of Rhea like to share!

Up to Down V (Modern Egyptian, Classic Cabaret)
Start palms in, hands above your head, and bring hands down just outside the body, pulling your elbows straight behind you.  At the level of the waist, turn the palms up with the fingers slightly curled in, so you lead the downward movement with the backs of the hands.  Open the fingers outwards just below the hips, and then bring the hands back up again, turning the palms out at the level of the ribs.

Hold arms open at a 45° angle forward (i.e. not in front of you and not to the side), elbows slightly bent, palms up at breast level, then turn wrists so that palms face out. Note: this is NOT like the Greek insult "Ná," nor like the American hand sign for "stop" that cops use. "W" Arms (Classic Cabaret, Pharaonic)
For American style, hold hands out to the side at shoulder level with elbows are softly bent and a little behind you while the hands are slightly in front of you – palms can be out or up, but fingers and palms must be soft.
