The Baltimore Daughters of Rhea Dance Ensemble perform Piper's Aziza choreography at Belly Dance Magic 2004




This version of Aziza has three taqsim wahada, a.k.a. slow chiftitelli, pieces.  At the third one (flute) enter stage, arms up high, palms out.

a) 4 counts of 8 Body Rolls Down with Push-Step, right foot in front:

  • 1st count of 8 - arms go down
  • 2nd count of 8 - arms go up
  • 3rd count of 8 - left arm goes down
  • 4th count of 8 - right arm goes down

By the last count of 8, you should be in your position on stage and facing forward with the weight on the right foot.

b) Take a whole count of 8 to do a half circle with hips starting back and to the right, and ending over to the left - start with right arm down, hand curls near right hip, then left hand curls, end with arms in Artemis Position, weight on left foot, right hand to right temple.

c) Take 4 counts to switch to the right (reverse of b), then 3 counts to do a counter-clockwise hip spiral (starts as a circle and ends as a rotation) - bring arms in and cross hands in front of chest - end on 7 with your weight on left foot, right hip lifted.

d) Take one count of 8 to do a single Dip Figure 8 starting on the right - hands uncross and slowly open up and out - palms turn out on 4 and hands are moving through 3 and 6 o’clock by the last count.

e) Take one count of 4 to do a single Dip Figure 8 - arms continue to smoothly move down and back to crossed again by 5 when you . . .

f) Take 3 counts to do another 1.5 Dip Figure 8s (heels come down R, L, R on the beat).

g) Do (d), (e) and (f) in reverse with Scoop Figure 8s.

h) Two counts of 8 of 3-D Front-to-Back Horizontal Figure 8s, back line moving forward to the front of the stage, back line stays in position.

i) Two counts of 8, Hip Rotation/Circles to the side + Body Roll Down, moving to your right, then left. End both arms up.

Music Change

you have 20 counts to choo-choo backwards and move into a half circle

  • 1st count of 8 - arms come slowly down in front of body to level of waist (palms face you, fingers pointed up)
  • 2nd count of 8 - fingers curl inwards, hands move around behind waist, out to the sides and forwards, end fingers pointing front, palms down, right hand on top of left
  • Count 4 - body moves to face clockwise in the 1/2 circle, hands move in front of your left hip and just to the inside of the circle from the right hip of the dancer to your left - on 5 stop, weight on left foot, right toe behind you, body angled to clockwise - head angled so you could look back at your right hip, but eyes to the center of the circle - hold

2 counts of 8 Right Hip Ups in Exaggerated Egyptian Posture

Hips pulled back, torso angled forward, chest and head up high, NO SHOULDER ACTION

2 counts of 8 Shoulder Shimmy

Swivel to face front into the center of the circle, weight still on left foot, NO HIP ACTION

2 counts of 8 Left Hip Ups with Exaggerated Egyptian Posture

Swivel weight to right foot, angle body right, left foot back behind you, Betty Boop Hands down by right hip, head angled so you could look at left hip, but eyes forward

2 counts of 8 Basic Shimmy

Swivel to face into the circle, Basic Shimmy Posture with flat feet, arms down by sides in an upside down V, palms facing down

Count of 12
  • 1st count of 4 - swivel to face clockwise, 1/4 time body roll down, look into circle while left arm slowly rises palm out, slide right foot forward to left instep
  • 2nd count of 4 - second body roll down while slowly looking up at left hand as you turn it to face palm towards you
  • 3rd count of 4 - hold body, look forward at audience, bring right arm out from shoulder - PAUSE (prepare for that Hip Drop!)

2 counts of 8 Right Hip Drops layered over a right hip front-to-back Hip Circle with 1/4 turns, left arm up, pivot on left foot, right arm swoops on 4 and 8

2 counts of 8 Scoop Figure 8s with a Double Drop (Ma Ali step)

Move to your right first, look forward and cross forearms during the Figure 8, then look at hip that is dropping (one hand to temple, other palm down near hip)

2 counts of 8 Roundy-Rounds

Hold hands

2 counts of 8 Body Rolls Down with a left Double Hip Drop

Moving forward from the 1/2 circle to a perfect line by the second count of 8

* On 1, swivel to face stage right, stepping with the left foot and putting your left hand on
or near the left shoulder of the dancer in front of you - we should be in a perfect line! *

2 counts of 8 3/4 Shimmy with Swivel moving in a U

Left hand on the shoulder of the dancer front of you, right arm out to side - make sure you can see the faces of the people in the first row over your right hand!

1 count of 8 3/4 Shimmy with Posture Tilts

Look over right hand out at audience

Head is looking forward while the body is facing stage left,

the left hand is still on the shoulder of the dancer in front of you

1 count of 8 Choo-Choo sideways (moving backwards) but face looking front, right arm is still pointing towards audience, left hand comes down in front of you (stage left) and up to the side of you (back stage) - front line moves back fast, back line moves back really fast to get back into double line formation (if you were on the right before, you will be on the left now, but in the same line)

You have 6 more counts of choo-choos to turn to face forward and make sure you are in a straight line with the other dancers (you are not alone out there - do not ignore them!), on 7 stop, feet shoulder width apart, right arm down to side, left arm out in front of you, palm down at belly button level

FRRRAP – FRRRAP – FRRRAP FRRRAP FRRRAP - pause

Neutral Posture, body facing audience, feet shoulder width apart, looking front

Shift weight to left foot, right foot pointed to side, look at left hip - double left hip, hold

Reverse to stand on right foot with left toes pointing side, look at right hip - double right hip, hold

Repeat left and right and left - hold, look front

FRRRAP - FRRRAP - FRRRAP FRRRAP FRRRAP - pause

Step forward on right foot - double right hip, hold

Step forward on left foot - double left hip, hold

Repeat right and left and right - hold

Quickly step backwards onto your left foot, pushing against the floor with your right foot so that you end facing at a 45° angle towards stage left with a very tight pelvic tilt forward, left hand in a serving position exactly at breast level, right arm in Back C

TAC, TAC TAC, TACTAC

Pelvic tilt, back, front back, front back

BO BO BO - pause

Look at right hip for up down up - then look up, right arm out at a 45° angle towards stage right

Swivel on left foot to face front bringing arms down (elbows first, fingers last) into a down V, feet hips width apart, knees slightly bent, look down at left hand

9 TACs (fast) tone steady - pause

Basic Shimmy starting right while raising arms to a V looking at left hand, end right hip out - hold

9 TACs (fast) tone goes up - pause

Basic Shimmy starting left while lowering arms still looking at left hand, end left hip out - hold

FRAP, FRAP, FRAP - pause

2.5 clockwise hip circles (accent forward on beat) ending hips right - then look forward

2.5 counterclockwise hip circles (accent forward on beat), end hips left - arms still down, still looking forward

1.25 counterclockwise chest circles ending chest left, as you raise left hand W arm, and shifting weight to the left foot as you pull the right foot in

Right hip out, then Left Hip Lift Up-and-In in quick succession, right hand still at temple, left hand still down, still looking at audience

3/4 Swing Shimmies, body straight up, arms down in a V

Pose on 10 with left let pointed straight out at a 45° angle forward, right arm up, left arm out

Twist Hip, look out over left hand – then, step back, body at a 45° angle towards stage left in Egyptian Posture, feet together, left foot flat, right foot on the ball, hands in Back C, look forward

Right Hip Drops with Clenches starting up on the beat, sharp

8 Right Hip Rotations, same posture, still looking forward, hands still in Back C

DRUM ROLL count = 5

Look stage left, Float Arms and Shoulder Shimmy (your shoulders should be at 45° so you should still see your left shoulder if you look in the mirror), on 5 look over right shoulder at audience

Step onto right foot, right arm up, right hip out and open right fingers on the first TAC, then drop left arm and hip, swooping forward (avoid hitting the dancer to your left!) while you swivel to point left toes at a 45° angle forward on second TAC - count 8 twist shimmys

LONG DRUM ROLL

Finale

a) 1st 8 - Right Hip Pushes pivoting on the left foot to face stage left - on 8 put your left hand on the shoulder of the dancer in front of you

b) 2nd 8 - Hip Pulls Front-Front-Back-Back, on 8 left arm goes up

c) 3rd 8 - Front line continues forward as in b, back line moves back with Right Hip Pushes

Count of 3 - Turn with Right Hip Pushes in a clockwise 1/2 circle to face stage right, on 4 do a little kick with your right foot to stage right, right toe pointed

Cha-Cha step

One count of 8 Choo-Choos forward, arms going up

Quick Rose Blossom Arms ending up in a V while crossing right foot over left foot for a 1/2 point turn, ending back to audience, hold

Swivel on right foot to face stage right, right hand on right hip, left arm pointing straight in front of your shoulders to stage right, look over left shoulder at audience, double Left Hip Drop

Reverse

3/4 Shimmy layered with Side Slides stepping right and left and right to the beat

Cross left toe behind right foot to spin half a turn counterclockwise to face audience, arms down

3 turns, finish weight on right foot, left foot on toe, left arm out, right arm up, Turkish Posture
