Exerpt from Liz Richardson's Idle Ramblings blog 8/5/07 The [Belly Dance Magic] show was absolutely incredible. And inspiring, as I'm seriously
thinking about taking bellydance again. ... Considering that the status of bellydance in
the US - and many countries - as the Middle Eastern equivalent of a
pole dancer, audience exposure to performances like the ones we saw
last night would really help the industry be taken seriously as an art
form.
Those of you who know me I have a pet peeve against
dancers or shows that claim to be "professional" that don't give me
that zing. You know, the zing. That thing that you get when you see
either really incredible technique to the point that you can't see the
technique and instead just see the movement? I got the zing a lot last
night. Naimah's number actually had a Native American feel to the
costumes and the music. Melina did a sword/dagger routine in which she
balanced a sword on the tip of a dagger held in her mouth. Piper did an
American Cabaret number that emphasized hip and other body isolations,
and Lisa Zahiya did a piece to music that combined eastern Doumbek
sounds with a hip-hop beat. I downloaded the music this morning and
have been listening to it every since. :-)
Aug. '07 Dear Piper, thank you so much for putting on Belly
Pallooza & the Magic show. I know it
takes an inordinate amount of time money and work, but
it was sooo great! I thought the belly
magic show was really wonderful. Lily went with me & she was enchanted the
whole time (till she passed out), and said she wants to be Melina when she
grows up (the ultimate kid compliment).
Though I’ve seen some of [Melina's] circus numbers a few times, they still are
still a marvel to witness, and the duet with Sacha was especially touching to
me—it made me cry! Such a beautiful
metaphor for love, the trapeze act… And
the sword on the dagger—words cannot describe the amazingness!! You really presented something no one around
here has ever seen, I think. It was so great to be just an audience member and
enjoy the show—I really loved it & hope everyone felt good about it,
because it was a show to be proud of. I also thought your peacock hip scarf costume
was yet another feat of creative costuming genius! It was extremely flattering and looked
gorgeous on you, even from the back. I don’t
know how you found the time to make it!
Niiiice job!! Kudos!!
Mazeltov! Cheers! Xoxo, val
Aug. '07 Good morning Piper, what can I say about "Magic"
!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm always moved to tears of Joy by the Beauty of the performances
!!! The atmosphere that you create is like a mystical wonderland and
each performance is a fantastical story !!! And I also love how I
feel as though I've been invited into your talented family
circle and given a seat at a special banquet where you've all
"just" decided to have a intimate show !!! But, the
level of professionalism of all the performers makes for First Class
Entertainment !!! Sincerely, Carol
July '07 The
[Belly Dance Magic] show last year was the best belly dancing show I ever saw! If you had the
DVD of it, I would have driven right over to your house to pick it up! I
was hoping to see it again before the show this year. Best wishes on
another fantastic and fun performance! I'll see you soon! Patrice
Sep. '04 People, as well as myself, are
still buzzing from the 2004 [Belly Dance Magic] show. (It was my 1st
time seeing you and your mom Rhea live). She's still dancing like a teenager,
I think her age on her driver's license reads ''ageless''. Brandon
Aug. '04 Piper, you, your sister and
your mother are amazing! I thought that Melina's number with Sacha on the
trapeze was the show-stopper. Very sensual and incredibly athletic
performance! I was in awe. Thank you so much for organizing this event and I
hope you have many more to come. Best wishes for more
dancing! Mary
Aug. '04 Piper – My
girlfriend and I loved your show. You all are awesome! Thank you so much for a
wonderful evening! Dave
Aug. '04 Melina and
Piper, the August
7th Baltimore Gala was INCREDIBLE! I am so glad my friend (a ballroom dance
instructor who takes Egyptian Bellydance) got to see this show! She was
awestruck--as was I!! The bellydancing was beautiful--with the precision and
difficulty of a master and the circus performance was
breathtaking. I know I
wasn't breathing until it was over! :) Thank you again for a spectacular
performance! Gloria
Aug. '04 Hello Piper! Let me start by saying how much your show rocked! It was truly amazing and made bellydance superstars look like star search. My jaw was hanging open through the whole time and I smiled so much my face hurt. It was great. Secondly, I was wondering if I could work out a deal with you. As part of my wedding gift to [my fiancé], I would like to pay for her to take classes as much as she wants next year. She always talks about how she wants to take more classes with you but with the wedding [it hasn't been possible. Do you have gift certificates?] Thanks so much for everything and I look forward to hearing from you soon! Cheers, Nathaniel
