Erev Shel Shoshanim Veil Choreography

Choreographed by Piper, to track 10 on Gems of the Middle East, Volume II by

Mimi Spencer and Mary Ellen Donald, available from www.MaryEllenDonald.com.

Choreography can be done to any taqsim wahad (slow chiftiteli) or bolero rhythm.







Piper is 7 months pregnant in this video taken at the 2003 Baltimore Daughters of Rhea Recital. Music was recorded by Mary Ellen Donald and Mimi Spencer on their Gems of the Middle East, Volume II CD.


Start with rectangular veil draped over right shoulder, both ends tucked into left hip. Pose with left hand near left hip, right hand high.

Wave right hand down in front of body and over in front of right hip.

Slow Snake Arms for 4 counts, faster for the next 4 counts, ending with both hands framing right hip.

Standing at 45° towards your right, do 2 body rolls down while waving left hand down body.

Bring both hands down behind hips (4)
Bring right hand under veil to grab edge with both hands in front of diaphragm and pull veil forward, out of left hip tuck (4)
Open edge and wrap veil over nose, under eyes then around the head - stop on 8.

Bring veil slowly down in front of you so that you reveal face, then one shoulder at a time.

5 - Swish veil up with left hand as you begin to turn counterclockwise
6 - Grab veil with the right hand and continue turning.

On “and-one” step right-left, lunging down low to the left while you swoop the veil with your right hand up high and then down in front of you. On 2 - push hard with the left foot and leg to come back up with your weight on the right so that you can spin clockwise with right hand out holding the veil, left hand on left hip. As you turn, bring both hands down and behind you and then up over your head. On 5, grab the veil with the left hand too and spread it out behind you so that it is taut from your left hip up to your right hand and over to your left hand.

On 2nd count of 8, 5 is normal, stepping on right foot, chest out and high, as you start you body roll down on 6 bring your right arm around to the right and down in front of you while your left hand goes above your head and around to the right so that you end with the veil in front of you as you turn counterclockwise on 7, 8. Let go of the veil with the right hand and end holding the veil high with the left hand, right hand out (veil should be draped over the right hip).

On 2nd count of 8 on 5, bring left hand out to left side and around in front of you
6 - step right foot over left turning counterclockwise while bringing right arm inside veil as your left hand unwraps you
7 - step right over left again, repeating in order to rewap veil in the other direction
8 - hold veil above and behind head with both hands

Turn clockwise, grabbing veil with the right hand and pulling out of the hip tuck. Grab a fist fill of veil edge with your left hand and put it behind the small of your back while bring the right hand up and behind your head. End facing stage right.

On 1, lunge down, weight on right foot, left foot behind you and slowly come up and body roll down

Slowly bring hands up and together to frame face, come up on toes and move sideways to the left

Turn clockwise, bringing veil around to the right of you and kick left foot to stage left, right hand high, left hand out above foot

Last kick is to the left, right hand high, left hand out above foot

On 1, bring foot and left hand down and swoop veil as you turn clockwise, step back with veil open in front of you and then walk forward, draping veil over shoulders. End standing of flat feet, arms up, knees bent.

Forward Cylinders
Bring hands slowly down and grab the veil that is hanging down behind you

Reverse Cylinders
Bring hands slowly up holding the veil in your closed hands

Dip Figure 8s moving to the left
Arms still up in a V with veil draped over shoulders and wrapped around arms.

Snake Arms moving sideways on toes, making a circle to end center stage facing forward.

Beata Step
Veil is still wrapped around arms.

Body Rolls Down stepping sideways moving right. As you move, finger through the veil and grab edge, dropping the corners so you have bat wings. On 6 step left foot flat and then do Dip Figure 8s for 7 & 8. Reverse.

Slowly spin counter clockwise. End facing 45° to stage left, standing on your left foot, right foot on toe, arms out to sides, left arm slightly higher than your head, right arm slightly lower than your shoulder.

Body Rolls Down in place, slowly bringing left hand to left temple.

Wave left hand slowly in down, out and back up, then bend knees, tuck in hips, lean back from thighs (don’t hurt your back by arching!) and dip your right hand in, down, out and back up again.

Hold pose dramatically!
