Dr.
Piper Reid Hunt is the director and chief choreographer of the Baltimore
Daughters of Rhea Dance Ensemble. The
winner of the prestigious Belly Dancer of the Year competition in 2000, Piper
received her doctorate in Human Genetics and Molecular Biology from The Johns
Hopkins University in 2002. Learn from
an elegant professional dancer with a Ph.D. in science and a 15 year career dancing
in Arabic and Greek nightclubs around the world.
Piper began performing at the age of 8 in her mother Rhea's troupe; she began teaching at the Ergastiri Horou in the Kolonaki area of Athens in 1980. Since then she has trained numerous professional dancers and dance instructors, both in Greece and in the U.S. Drawing
on (1) over two decades of experience teaching dance and (2) the systematic methodology of science education, Piper has developed a
technique-based instruction method emphasizing posture, precision movement,
fluidity, and dynamic presentation. The
PiperMethod™ of Belly Dance teaches students the grace and
physical control necessary to turn movement into dance. Combinations and choreographies are utilized
to help students learn smooth transitions and music interpretation. There is also a certification program
designed to assess each dancer’s strengths and opportunities for improvement, and to identify qualified
belly dance teachers.

Piper's classes
To
take private lessons with Piper, or to join small group classes in her
home studio (just south of Baltimore, west of BWI), you must already be
one of Piper's students, or have recommendations from other teachers or
dancers. The cost is $75 for a single hour and
$60/fifty-minute-hour for sessions, payable in advance. The fee can be
shared by a maximum of 5 people.
Attendees are responsible for organizing their own groups! If one person or 5 people attend, the total price is the same. This
is something to work out amongst the attendees. Credit will be given
for pre-paid classes if they are cancelled 24 hours in advance.
Sometimes, there is an opening in an on-going class; to check if spaces are available, go to Piper's calendar.
