Rhea’s Sibek Choreography

with notes for Drum, Cymbals, and Tambourine

(two counts of 8) Dramatic Hand Undulations
Begin standing on the right foot parallel (= toes point towards audience), with the left knee turned out and left foot on the ball, right hand on right hip, left hand held high, torso 45° stage left. Reverse for 2nd 8.
Drum: for 1st count of 8, softly hit the drum with right fingers tak tak, tak tak, taktaktaktaktaktak while undulating left hand downwards. Lift right hand on 1 and undulate it downwards for the 2nd count of 8.
Cymbals: play right hand as you undulate your left hand downwards, reverse.
Tambourine: gently hitting right leg with tamb in right hand, undulate left hand, then shake tamb for 2nd count of 8.

(one count of 8) Folkloric Style Step-Hip
Step right, left hip, step left, right hip. Take each step forward at a slight angle and let the hips be loose and swingy with a slight twist for each hip up.
Drum: play the Saidi rhythm
Cymbals: Basic with Turkish Basic Arms (A1 & A3 in alternation)
Tambourine: with right hand, hit raised hip on even beats. Left arm up in A3 on 2, down in E7 on 4, up on 6, down on 8.

(one count of 4) Swivel/Lunge-Reverse-Turn-Step
Swivel right and lunge onto the right foot on 1. Swivel back and hop onto the left foot on 2, while kicking right foot back from the knee and spotting on the audience behind you. Continue turn counterclockwise, stepping right on 3 and left on 4.
Cymbals: Basic with right arm A3, left arm A8 on 1, both arms in E2 on 2, then close to a loose A5 as you turn.
Tambourine: Hit in front of your chest on 1, then push hands down as you turn

(one count of 4) Folkloric Style Hip Drops
4 right Hip Drops (loose and swingy with a slight twist).
Cymbals: R-L-ting on the beat, hands over head.
Tambourine: Hit tambourine over head on the beat.

(one count of 8) Forward-Step-Back-Step
Stepping right, left, right, left: hips swing side to side as you swivel just a bit, angling left on 1, right on 3.
Cymbals: Basic the backs of the hands meet above head on 2, open out and down on 4, then meet in front of chest on 5, then open out and back on 7.
Tambourine: Hit above head on 1, hip on 3, in front of chest on 5, hip on 7.

(one count of 8) Katak: AndFront-AndSide ending in a kick on 8
Moving to stage left, step RightLeft on every AndBeat. Right hip hits forward on odd beats and to the side on even beats. On 7, swivel towards the audience and step right, on 8 kick left leg to stage left.
Cymbals: Basic + clack on 8, A6 Arms but twisting torso and arms slightly so hands move in opposite direction of hips.
Tambourine: hit right hip on odd beats, hit tamb with left hand on even beats. Hit tamb over head on 8.

(two counts of 8) Step-Step-Swivel-Kick finishing with a Swing/Twist Hip
Walk for the first two, turn for the next two, ending facing front with a left Swing/Twist Hip instead of a kick.
Cymbals: Basic - use Taffy Hands for the 3 kicks, and finish in Turkish Basic Arms.
Tambourine: left hand hits tamb at waist level on 4, then over head on 8 when you kick towards audience to begin turn. Hit tmb with left had at waist level on 4, then switch to the left hand on 8.

Now go back to the beginning, but reverse everything, stepping left first so that you finish with a Swing/Twist hip on the right, leaving the right foot free for...

(one count of 8) Hip Drops (drum) or Katak: BackStep-HipStep (cymbals, tamb.)

  • Drum: Hip Drops, dip for 4 counts and rise for 4 counts
  • Zills and tamb: K:BS-HS, step RightLeft with each AndBeat, the right foot on And, the left on the Beat, moving to the right.

Cymbals: Half-time singles, A3 Arms for K:BS-HS.
Tambourine: Hit hand over head on odd beats with Chest Tilts.

(two counts of 8) ChaCha Step
Begin by swiveling to face stage right while tucking the hips under and stepping the right foot on the ball back behind the left foot. On 2, push forward with the right to step left, then face audience to step Right, LeftRight for 3, &4. Reverse. Repeat.
Cymbals: 3, 3, 7 with A7 Arms, with same hand as foot fluorishing upwards on 1.
Tambourine: Hit tambourine in front of chest on 1, shake for 3 & 4.

(two counts of 8) ChaCha Turn
Begin with swivel, stepping right foot back towards backstage while looking over your shoulder at the audience on 1, swivel back to face front and step left on 2. Step Right-LeftRight on 3-&4. Reverse. Repeat.
Tambourine: Hit in front of chest on 1, push hands downwards as you turn.
Cymbals: 3, 3, 7 – for first turn, right arm A3, left arm A8 on 1. On 2, both arms are in E2, then close to a loose A5 as you turn. Reverse.

(two counts of 8) Back-Forward-Step-Hip
Tuck pelvis under while stepping back on the ball with the right foot on 1. Step forward left on 2, right on 3, left hip up on 4. Reverse. Repeat.
Tambourine: Hit tambourine over head on 1, hit left hip on 4 while the left hand is in E7. Hit tambourine over head on 5, hit right hip on 8 while the left hand is up in A3.
Cymbals: Basic, L4 Arms on 1 and 5, with Turkish Basic Arms on 4 and 8.
