Piper is a second-generation belly dancer
and winner of the prestigious Belly Dancer of the Year Competition in
2000. Her captivating style is a fusion of traditional and modern
Middle Eastern and North African dance influences, with just a dash of flamenco and jazz thrown in to spice up the mix!
Piper began
performing at the age of 8 in her mother Rhea's troupe, Nar El Nissa
(Women of Fire). By the time she was 17, she was the featured soloist
at several tavernas, bozookia, and Middle Eastern nightclubs in Athens, Greece, usually performing 4 to 6 shows a night, 7 nights a week. After a decade of working as a
professional dancer in Europe, Piper returned to America and academe, where she earned a Doctorate in Human Genetics and Molecular
Biology from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 2002.
Recognized by dance ethnographer Elizabeth Artemis Mourat as an expert in Vintage Oriental (also called Classic Cabaret style belly dance), Piper also
specializes in thematic Oriental dance performances, some with
authentic regional Middle Eastern music and costumes; others are
original creations of modern belly dance. Some of her dances tell a
story, others are fusions of Middle Eastern dance with flamenco or jazz.
Whether an artful
dance performance, or a breathtaking sword balancing act, or a good
laugh (with male guests dancing in a comedic mock lesson) best suits
your wedding, birthday party, or special event, Piper is sure to be a
hit with your most discriminating guests.
Fees
begin at $400 for a single, 20 minute performance in the Baltimore/DC area. Troupe performances begin at $800 for Piper and two Daughters of Rhea dancers. If you
are scheduling an event and would like to see a demo DVD before signing
a contract, please email piper at comcast dot net.
